What is a Bridge for Teeth

If you have ever lost an adult tooth, you may have asked your dentist, “what is a bridge for teeth?” In fact, dental bridges are just that, a bridge between two fixed teeth that hold one or more false teeth. Dental bridges are a relatively easy way to replace your missing tooth.

A missing tooth can be an upsetting situation. If the tooth is in the front of your mouth, it will certainly affect your smile and will be noticeable every time you open your mouth. Aside from the visible reasons to replace a missing tooth, these gaps can cause your teeth to shift and can affect your ability to chew properly. Sometimes these issues can cause related jaw pain. Replacing missing teeth is therefore very important to your dental health.

In order to prepare for your bridge, your dentist will first numb the area of your mouth that is being treated. Next she will prepare the two teeth on either side of the one or more missing teeth. These teeth, called abutment teeth, will hold the false tooth (or teeth) that will fill the open space. The abutment teeth are prepared for crowns by removing some of their enamel. Next a very accurate impression is made so that the fixture will fit precisely, allowing you to resume natural chewing and smiling. Your impression will be sent to a lab where your bridge will be constructed. You will leave your first visit with a temporary bridge, and will return when your dentist receives the permanent bridge. Typically your bridge will be glued permanently into place on your second visit. Sometimes your dentist might prefer temporary gluing to allow your dental tissue to heal a bit more before permanent attachment. Most bridges last for years, but might require regluing over time.

Prosthetic dental fixtures are a wonderful answer to the problem of lost teeth. They can restore the look and feel of natural teeth. If you are ever asked, “What is a bridge for teeth?” flash your new smile and tell them how great it is.
